Chartered Clinical Psychologist I work with with adults and older adults with a range of psychological problems, including depression, anxiety, life transition difficulties, relationship issues, etc. I am trained and experienced in several types of therapeutic intervention and usually recommend the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approach (ACT is pronounced as a verb). ACT is part of the so-called "third wave" of cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT) and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in clinical research. The ACT way of working has two basic aims, which are worked on simultaneously. First, to help people acquire a set of skills that will allow them to handle painful thoughts and feelings more effectively, so that they have much less impact and influence (in contrast to evaluating dysfunctional thoughts in terms of believability etc, as in traditional CBT). The second aim is to help people to create a full and meaningful life by spending some time clarifying their values. Then, using that information as a guide, setting achievable goals and taking action to change life for the better and develop a sense of purpose and vitality. This is an active form of therapy with options for skill building between sessions. |
